  13. I am happy to report that my RFI nightmare is over.

  15. First, I installed a ferrite bead at the modem input.
  16.  
  17. Second, I didn't take no from the phone company for an answer.  I called
  18. them again, and they were quite sympathetic this time.  They tested the
  19. line on their end and said it was "unbalanced" (whatever that means).
  20. They had a serviceperson out here right away who fixed the line and
  21. applied a line filter to boot.

  23. Third, we had arranged that our old phone line remain active and that
  24. both lines share the same (the old) phone number--so that if the phone
  25. rang at one place, it would ring at the other.  Speculation has it
  26. that this arrangement was creating one giant (two-mile long) antenna.
  27. I had them disconnect the old line.

  29. The happy result:  The problem has vanished!

  31. I'm a bit surprised, because the radio transmitter is right across the
  32. street!

  34. All in all, I'm really pretty lucky.  I've come to know just how
  35. intractable this sort of problem can be.  I would have been devastated
  36. if it had not been solved.
