- Now, for the opposing viewpoint...
-
- Well, maybe not so opposing. I tried the Psychopath, uh, Telepath. The
- first one wouldn't connect to anything at over 2400 bps; the secon would
- connect selectively (well, maybe better than that, perhaps 80% of the
- time) to other modems. About Kermit, the file transfer protocol: the TP
- would work with Kermit (file transfer protocol, not the comm program,
- which I never tried but reputedly does not work), but it caused
- thousands of errors (which were resent and therefore received correctly)
- for even small (25K) downloads. As you might imagine, the effective
- transfer rate dropped precipitously when using that protocol (the only
- one supported by our local campus server). I returned the TP and
- replaced it with a Practical Peripherals PM14400FX unit that has been
- working flawlessly. The Telepath sent faxes fine for me; I didn't have
- a chance to try it on receive. It was too sensitive to line noise, in
- my experience, and often disconnected on even local calls (all of which
- the PP unit handles with aplomb). You can't beat the software and modem
- deal of the TP, but I think it's a crummy piece of hardware. Just my two
- cents...
