  23. Hmmm, from one who works with token ring, I would like to expand the
  24. scope of the adjective 'dumb' to include the entire process of token
  25. passing.  No reflection on Mr. Young, it a nice turn of phrase.
  26. Token rings are dumb because they require the terminal nodes to
  27. understand the whole of the network mesh.

  32. I remember sitting in standards meetings for FDDI and listening
  33. to people try to develop algorithms for figuring out if the ring
  34. was up and what configuration the ring was in if it was up.  If
  35. for some reason a station thought the ring was down, it was
  36. obligated to bring the ring down itself by beaconing.  There was
  37. a movement afoot to maintain a complete ring map in the lowest
  38. layer of the stack so that the media controller would know
  39. something about the topology and could make intelligent decisions
  40. about when to beacon.  I proposed that it would be possible,
  41. probable even that under certain circumstances that a form of
  42. hysteresis would occur and that the network would oscillate between
  43. being completely up and completely down, and asked if it were
  44. possile to calculate under which circumstances this would happen.
  45. I stopped going to meetings before an answer was found.  Oh well.

  47. Token rings are seductively nice because they promise so much
  48. in theory, but deliver so little.   Bring on Plan 9, or something
  49. like it.
