- I am surprised that no one has ever complained about Sybase
- annual support costs. Last year Sybase introduced a new charge
- called a "contact fee". It is a hefty annual charge of over $10,000.
- (They try to temper it by offering a 50% discount the first year as
- well as 5 free educational days). I have been told by people at Sybase
- that this is to help Sybase pay for providing technical support (so
- 2 people at your company can phone Sybase to report bugs).
-
- Two people in the Syabse support maintenance department tell me that
- there is no choice in the matter. You don't have the option to say pay
- a fee per call. You are to either pay the update + contact fee or you
- get cut off from support. Whether you are a small site with say a 4
- user copy of Sybase running on one machine or a Fortune 500 company
- with hundreds of users, you pay the same.
-
- Having never heard of this kind of customer-unfriendly approach
- (who'd buy a 2 user copy of Sybase to try out if 2 years from now they
- have to pay over $10,000 to get support for it), I contacted Oracle
- (I thought Sybase might have got the idea from someone else). Nope,
- Oracle does not charge this way. They charge a percentage based on
- number of users, thus making their product more affordable for the
- small user.
-
- Conclusion: Sybase has mainly large customers and are leaving the
- scraps (that is, 1000's of little customers) to their competition
- such as Oracle, Ingres, Informix, etc.
