- I have a friend who has a small manufacturing business who is in need of some
- help with accounting, especially accounts receivable, invoicing, accounts
- payable, i.e., the usual stuff, as well as general ledger. I am not an
- accountant, so I may not be using correct terminology. He currently has
- an in-house system which he inherited when he purchased the business. The
- system is written in dBASE III+, and provides all of the above, less the
- general ledger, which is listed in the brief documentation, but is not
- installed. He is currently at the mercy of developers of the system, and
- every time he needs a simple fix, such as, listing of all orders by a certain
- customer for a certain period of time, the developers will charge a
- bundle for the code, and take their good time doing it. I have a limited
- knowledge of dBASEIII, and could possibly fix the problem, but have had
- trouble figuring out how the data files are organized and accessed by
- the programs. Their are over 300 programs and about 200 files. The
- company just recently starter using edi with one of their large customers
- and had to pay another big bundle to the developers to get the code written
- to support the loading of the edi input into the database (the input is
- orders from the big customer). My friend wants to disengage from the
- developer and has asked my advice on how to go about doing this. He also
- wonders if converting to dBASEIV will improve the time response of the
- system which is now 5-10 minutes for some queries. Their current machine
- is a 386 running at 25Mhz and he wonders if a 486 who provide significant
- improvement. I feel that he ought to go to a commercial package, rather
- that code a new systems in dBASEIV as the programming cost for this could
- be quite high.
- Does anyone know of any commercial packages that could do the job, which must
- include general ledger, as well as edi capability.
