- I'm looking for a small and simple general purpose database
- for text-based applications with the following features:
-
- - It should work as TSR in parallel with spreadsheets, word
- processors, modem programs, databases or other
- applications. Instantaneous swapping to memory or disk
- would be nice.
-
- - The cutting and pasting of a chosen record should be
- easily handled. Ideally a single keystroke should perform
- it.
-
- - In order to improve search performance the database files
- should be indexed.
-
- I am not looking for an all-singing all-dancing database
- management system. Simplicity should be the overriding
- factor. The goal is merely to paste adresses, bibliographic
- references etc. in a word processor.
-
- Yes, I have looked on archive sites. I am aware of ZEPHYR,
- dLITE, FASTFILE, READYREF, SIDEKICK, and the desktopmanager
- which comes with PCTOOLS, but none of them provides all the
- features I imagine.
-
- The main problem with these programs is that the cutting and
- pasting of a record is much too much complicated. It can be
- a nuisance getting at the information you require and paste
- it in your application. To give an example I quote the
- manual of ZEPHYR 2.0, a database manager which can be loaded
- as TSR and which provides a cut and paste utility:
-
- "The cut and paste functions are executed OUTSIDE of
- Zephyr only at this point. To block text from the top of
- the screen to a particular point on the screen and save
- it to the clipboard file, press <ALT-DEL> keys and move
- the cursor keys to highlight the desired text. Then
- press <ENTER> to complete the save. To paste the text
- which has been cut to the current position on the
- screen, press <ALT-INS> keys simultaneously."
-
- What an awkward procedure!
-
- Can anyone recommend a database, whether commercial or
- shareware, that has the afore-mentioned features? I'd write
- it myself, but I've never written a TSR and can't afford the
- time to learn how now.
- Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
-
- Thanks in advance.
