  16. large accounting systems routinely carry 5 or 6 digits to the
  17. RIGHT of the decimal.   The story I was told was that the round-off
  18. error in the accounts of GM amount to several millions in TAX payments,
  19. (or at least did in better times) so the IRS insists that the
  20. computations be carried with many digits.

  22. Oh yes - where do you get fractional cents??? Amortization and
  23. depreciation calculations, for starters.   Also the oil and
  24. gas biz has similar issues, particularly with currency exchange
  25. and the like.
