- Medical Informatics Program
- University of Pittsburgh
-
-
- The University of Pittsburgh training program in medical informatics
- offers a degree-granting track leading to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, as well as
- a postgraduate research fellowship track. The training program takes
- advantage of six existing University of Pittsburgh professional schools of
- the Health Sciences: Medicine, Dentistry, Public Health, Pharmacy, Nursing,
- and Health Related Professions. In addition, there are extensive clinical
- facilities available through the six major teaching hospitals of the
- University Health Center. Existing laboratories actively engaged in medical
- informatics research include the Section of Medical Informatics, the
- Intelligent Systems Laboratory, and the Office of Biomedical Informatics.
-
- The training program provides opportunities for both applied and
- theoretical research. Individuals with diverse backgrounds and interests
- will be accepted into the program. The program provides a formal, rigorous
- academic curriculum to train medical informatics researchers and educators.
- Participation in research is a major component of the program. Current
- research in medical informatics at the University of Pittsburgh includes
- projects that address the following areas:
-
- Computer-based diagnostic systems
- Medical knowledge acquisition
- Medical information retrieval
- Evaluation of computer-based medical decision making systems
- Medical databases, including visual databases
- Machine learning
- Uncertain reasoning
- Expert systems
- Unified Medical Language System (multiple projects)
- Integrated Academic Information Management System (multiple projects)
-
- The location on campus of the University Health Center facilitates
- collaboration among clinicians and researchers in other departments, such as
- computer science.
-
- Faculty from many schools and departments are involved in the
- program. The program's medical informatics faculty members are:
-
- Richard A. Bankowitz, Bruce G. Buchanan, Gregory F. Cooper, Nunzia B. Giuse,
- Dario Giuse, Henry Lowe and Randolph A. Miller.
-
- The Medical Informatics training program offers formal course work
- and degrees. Usually, degrees are obtained through the Intelligent Systems
- Program (ISP) of the University of Pittsburgh. The ISP is an independent
- degree-granting program at the University. It provides a center for graduate
- training and research in artificial intelligence. The ISP has a track which
- specializes its curriculum for individuals interested in medical
- informatics. Faculty members in the ISP include:
-
- Kevin D. Ashley (Law), Gordon Banks (Neurology), Alan Lesgold
- (Psychology, ISP co-director), Johanna D. Moore (Computer Science),
- Martha E. Pollack (Computer Science), Kenneth F. Schaffner (History
- and Philosophy of Science), Walter Schneider (Psychology), Steven
- Small (Neurology), Richmond H. Thomason (Linguistics, ISP
- co-director), and Kurt VanLehn (Computer Science).
-
- Individuals interested in obtaining a formal degree in medical
- informatics through the ISP should apply either to the M.S. or the Ph.D.
- program of the ISP. A non-degree research fellowship program also is
- available through the Section of Medical Informatics for fully trained,
- board certified physicians who wish to remain clinically active while
- pursuing careers in medical informatics. These individuals will be given the
- opportunity to join ongoing research projects in medical informatics and to
- take courses related to medical informatics without obtaining a formal
- degree. In addition, qualified post-doctoral trainees in other areas of the
- health sciences (e.g., a Ph.D. in Biostatistics) are eligible to train as
- fellows in medical informatics under the same guidelines.
-
- National Library of Medicine (NLM) fellowships may be available to
- applicants with M.D. or Ph.D. degrees.
-
- For further information about the M.S. and Ph.D. programs in the
- ISP, send electronic mail to
-
- isp@pogo.isp.pitt.edu
-
- or write to Intelligent Systems Program, Cathedral of Learning, Room
- 901, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA 15260, or call (412)
- 624-5755.
-
- For further information about NLM fellowships, write to the Section
- of Medical Informatics, B50A Lothrop Hall, 190 Lothrop Street, University of
- Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA 15261, or call (412) 648-3190.
-
- January 1, 1993 is the deadline for receiving applications for
- consideration for admission in autumn 1993.
