- I am astounded at all the hostile, negative follow-ups that have appeared in
- response to this. IMHO such challenges as posed by this competition are to be
- encouraged. I have seen numerous talented academics and students veer away
- from the AI field because of what is seen as its emphasis on formalism, the
- need to couch everything in mathematical theorems, axioms, proofs, etc.
- Surely there is a place for ideas and theories - and this is just the sort of
- place where new ideas can be tested.
-
- The current state of the art makes it essential that the competition be based
- on something less than a complete passing of the Turing Test, as originally
- specified. We are still some way away from this. To restrict the test to a
- specific domain is clearly a wise decision, as can be seen precisely from the
- amount of interest shown by the media etc.
-
- If even one student or academic has their interest in NLP or AI increased in
- this way, then this competition should be encouraged....if the purists don't
- want to touch it, that's fine. Let everyone do their own thing, OK ?
