  19.               Engineering Design Analysis and Manufacturing (AI EDAM)
  20.                       Special Issue on Research Methodology

  22.     AI EDAM is an international journal devoted to the reporting of AI
  23.     (research and applications) in engineering design, analysis, and
  24.     manufacturing (AIEDAM). AIEDAM is a growing field attracting many 
  25.     researchers from academia and practitioners from industry. Early
  26.     work in this field was largely exploratory and often ignored 
  27.     methodological issues. Methodological self-reflection does not 
  28.     presuppose there is one method agreed to by all practitioners,
  29.     but more likely that there are many methods all in need of evaluation 
  30.     and critique to determine the limits of their applicability. 
  31.     Methodological reflection also includes the interpretation of 
  32.     research activity including: the meaning and evaluation of the
  33.     results, the accumulation of knowledge, the relation of research 
  34.     to practice, etc..

  36.     While some scattered studies on AIEDAM research methodology exist, the 
  37.     lack of adequate attention to this subject has some troublesome
  38.     consequences.  It is often unclear: (1) what the goals of the AIEDAM 
  39.     are, (2) what a significant contribution to the field is, and (3) what 
  40.     the appropriate or promising ways of approaching research
  41.     questions are. These problems, and others, complicate the interpretation
  42.     and understanding of research results and gradually make it difficult to
  43.     convince potential supporters of the practical merit of the field. This
  44.     special issue of AI EDAM on research methodology seeks to initiate a
  45.     discussion on these fundamental problems.

  47.     Topics can be chosen from (but need not be limited to) the following 
  48.     issues:
  49.  
  50.       o  Is AIEDAM a science, an art, or a practice?  Is it disciplinary,
  51.          inter-disciplinary, trans-disciplinary, or beyond disciplinary?
  52.       o  What is the purpose of AIEDAM research.
  53.       o  How should AIEDAM research be tested or validated?
  54.       o  How is knowledge accumulated in AIEDAM research?
  55.       o  What are good measures of AIEDAM research progress or goodness?
  56.       o  What is the relation between AIEDAM research and practice and how
  57.          does it influence the research methodology?
  58.       o  Is (should) research methodology of AIEDAM (be) different from
  59.          methodologies in other engineering disciplines?
  60.       o  What methodologies have been used in research, and were they
  61.          successes or failures.

  63.     This list is by no means exhaustive; other topics are welcome provided 
  64.     that they are relevant to the issue of AIEDAM research methodology.

  66.     All papers submitted to this special issue will be blind reviewed 
  67.     according to the usual procedure of AI EDAM.

  69.     Manuscripts should be limited to 35 typewritten, double spaced pages 
  70.     (12pt font), including figures, tables, and references; two-sided 
  71.     manuscripts are welcome. Each manuscript should have a title page with 
  72.     the title of the paper, full name(s) and affiliation(s) of author(s), 
  73.     complete postal and electronic addresses (if available), telephone 
  74.     number(s), and a maximum 300 word abstract.
