- The following is the text from a flyer I just produced publicizing some
- events that I'm coordinating (sponsored by the UCLA Asian American
- Studies Center). They may be of interest to some of you...

- 50th Anniversary of Japanese American Internment
- UCLA Asian American Studies Center
-
- DURING WORLD WAR II, more than 120,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry
- were rounded-up and imprisoned in American concentration camps. No
- charges were ever filed. No trials were held. Yet, they were
- incarcerated against their will for nearly four years. The only
- "crime" these loyal Americans committed was that they were of Japanese
- ancestry.
-
- Some fifty years later, UCLA has joined the Japanese American community
- in Los Angeles and across the nation in commemorating the fiftieth
- anniversary of this tragic chapter in American History. We hope you
- will join us for the concluding events of this important year of
- activities.
-
- The View from Within:
- Japanese American Art from the Internment Camps, 1942-1945
- UCLA Wight Art Gallery
- Oct. 13 - Dec. 6, 1992
-
- This exhibition includes over 135 paintings, works on paper, and
- sculpture of rarely seen images by over thirty Issei and Nisei (first
- and second generation Japanese Americans) artists who were unjustly
- interned during World War II. This presentation of the camp
- experience, as communicated directly though the artistic expression of
- the Japanese American people, greatly contributes to an increased
- understanding and appreciation of a community's history and artistic
- heritage. Co-sponsored by the Japanese American National Museum and
- the UCLA Wight Art Gallery. Docent tours available Saturday and Sunday
- at 1:30 PM. For more information and gallery hours, call (310)
- 825-9345. FREE.
-

- 12-1-A
- by Wakako Yamauchi
- Ralph Freud Playhouse
- MacGowan Hall, UCLA
- Nov. 10-15, 1992
-
- In a time of war, an American family is uprooted, transported against
- its will, and interned in a concentration camp--solely on the basis of
- ethnicity. Within the confines of the camp barracks bearing the
- stenciled number "12-1-A," the family struggles to overcome uncertainty
- and injustice in this moving drama of strength and courage. UCLA is
- proud to present this co-production, written and directed by artists
- with first-hand experience of the internment of Japanese Americans.
- UCLA students will join with the members of the East West Players, Los
- Angeles' acclaimed Asian American theatre company, in presenting this
- memorable work depicting a key chapter in our country's history.
-
- Directed by Rodney Kageyama and starring Nobu McCarthy, Dian Kobayashi
- and Lloyd Kino. Presented by the UCLA Center for the Performing Arts,
- the UCLA Department of Theater, the UCLA School of Theater, Film and
- Television and the East West Players.
-
- Ticket Prices: $13.00 general admission; $6.00 for students with ID
-
- For ticket sales, call the UCLA Central Ticket Office, (310) 825-2101.
