- Margaret, no doubt you are correct. No matter how perfect we may strive
- to be, there are just some men (or women) who won't find it satisfactory.
- I was in a bar last night where an incredibly elegant woman with Ivana
- Trump hair, a sleek figure (complete with $3000 breasts), and a sexy little
- red dress stood mingling (sp). There is no doubt in my mind that her "look"
- was for the benefit of men's attraction (or the thrill of competition with
- other women for men's attraction). When she left the bar, this old fart
- (notice I did not use the term "boy") yelled out "try to keep your legs
- closed tonight." (Part of this story has a point, part of it is just
- venting.) Point being that the whole primping thing was for his benefit.
- And that's how it gets rewarded?
-
- If our attempts (no matter how misdirected) to please men are for the purpose
- of gaining their acceptance and validation, we will never win. When I
- suggested that we don't use our initials, I never made the assumption
- that this meant the eyes of the world would be opened at the sight of our
- glorious academic pursuits. Call me a cynic. But just because there are
- a few ignorant persons out there who poo-poo certain publications on the
- basis of the first name of the author(s), doesn't mean that I have to CARE
- about what these persons think.
-
- And remember, men are free to use their first name without fear of
- discrimination (I think). So next time you see an A.J. Smith - what are
- you going to assume?
-
- Some suggestions...
-
- How about the APA adopting a guideline that requires all publications to
- be submitted under initials only - for ALL authors?
-
- How about being comfortable with not living in an equal society, but
- learning to be comfortable with the idea that we are the first of our
- kind - that we are the foremothers of an equal society. I'm proud
- of my accomplishments - and the fact that occasionaly those accomplishments
- were made in the face of difficulty (of various kinds).
-
- How about Terri, Taylor, Morgan, Danni? (Homogeneity argument inferred.)
-
- Any others?
