  13. Z39.50 was first published in 1988.  This version, as written, is not in
  14. used by any system.  There are several organizations who have proprietary
  15. implementations.  All of these are being converted to the newest version
  16. of Z39.50, just now being published.  This version 2 of the standard was
  17. successfully balloted and is in the publication process.  Just to add
  18. spice to life, we are in the process of developing Version 3, which we
  19. hope to move to ballot in early Spring 1993.  Version 3 is being designed
  20. so that version 2 systems can interoperate with version 3 systems.  NOTIS
  21. is one of a group of about 30 organizations actively developing Z39.50
  22. conformant systems.  PacLink is their mainframe-based Z39.50 product.
  23. They also have announced ProPac, a PC-based Z39.50 product, which I
  24. believe will act solely as a client.

  26. As far as holdings are concerned, Z39.50 has no relationship whatsoever
  27. to the form in which holdings are maintained.  The system itself is
  28. responsible for converting the internal format of the holdings to a
  29. common format for transfer to the partner system.  There are currently
  30. two formats under discussion.  One is the MFHL record and the other is
  31. a structure described in a language used to describe other components
  32. of the messages transmitted between Z39.50 systems.  The latter has the
  33. advantage that it will be universally acceptable to all Z39.50 vendors
  34. while few currently support MFHL.  (NSI is a leader in this area).

  36. I think that as long as you follow the guidelines produced by NSI for
  37. holdings and conform to the MFHL standard, you will be fine.
