- Z39.50 was first published in 1988. This version, as written, is not in
- used by any system. There are several organizations who have proprietary
- implementations. All of these are being converted to the newest version
- of Z39.50, just now being published. This version 2 of the standard was
- successfully balloted and is in the publication process. Just to add
- spice to life, we are in the process of developing Version 3, which we
- hope to move to ballot in early Spring 1993. Version 3 is being designed
- so that version 2 systems can interoperate with version 3 systems. NOTIS
- is one of a group of about 30 organizations actively developing Z39.50
- conformant systems. PacLink is their mainframe-based Z39.50 product.
- They also have announced ProPac, a PC-based Z39.50 product, which I
- believe will act solely as a client.
-
- As far as holdings are concerned, Z39.50 has no relationship whatsoever
- to the form in which holdings are maintained. The system itself is
- responsible for converting the internal format of the holdings to a
- common format for transfer to the partner system. There are currently
- two formats under discussion. One is the MFHL record and the other is
- a structure described in a language used to describe other components
- of the messages transmitted between Z39.50 systems. The latter has the
- advantage that it will be universally acceptable to all Z39.50 vendors
- while few currently support MFHL. (NSI is a leader in this area).
-
- I think that as long as you follow the guidelines produced by NSI for
- holdings and conform to the MFHL standard, you will be fine.
