- Excuse the intrusion, but I thought that since we were exchanging
- bibliographies in religious and theological history a particular request
- might be allowed. -- Two Saturdays ago, in a meeting that included ates a
- prelates and television cameras, the Pope read a declaration *absolving*
- Galileo and, according to the Italian press, the Inquisition. The event
- was little and incompetently covered in the American press; the Italian press
- press gave more but incomplete coverage. -- Two documents are important:
- 1. the final report of the Papal Commission, headed by Card. Paul Poupard,
- which has been investigating the case for the last 13 years; and 2. the
- text of the Pope's own declatation. Has anyone seen full, printed
- versions of these documents? Perhaps some of our Italian colleagues? I
- would very much appreciate citations.
