- By odd coincidence, I just found out last night (about 8:30 p m east coast
- time) about the magical CTRL+ALT+ESC sequence, which I knew nothing about
- before.
-
- The call was from the man himself, Steve Siebert, which impressed me a bit.
- I figure if he's spending Saturday night in mid-town Manhattan (or wherever
- NBI's offices are) making tech support calls, that says something good
- about their trying to take care of business.
-
- But I digress. I had called NBI on Friday in high dudgeon because when I
- tried to pop up a TSR (in this case the AP Stylebook), Nota Bene destroyed
- the stylebook screen, its own, then froze. Solid. Had to reboot.
-
- I'd never had that problem from within 3.X, so my next physical motion was
- to start punching NBI's number on the phone. The reception said that Michael,
- who has been my main contact there since 4.0 came out and has been
- unfailingly helpful, was on another line, as was everyone else (read
- "receptionist" for "reception" above).
-
- She also asked if someone could call me on the weekend. In my mood of the
- moment, I thought, "What a cute PR ploy. Sure they're going to call me
- on the weekend." But I told her yes.
-
- Damned if they didn't.
-
- Well, it turns out, if I understood what Steve said correctly, that the
- CTRL+ALT+ESC sequence causes NB to store its screen fonts and drop into
- a DOS equivalent default. Then one can call up a TSR or go to another
- program or whatever and NB won't interfere with it. When you're finished
- using the other program, pressing CTRL+ESC signals NB to restore its
- fonts.
-
- After I'd called NBI on Friday, I'd looked in the documentation to see if
- I could find anything about TSR stuff and couldn't. I mentioned this to
- Steve and he said it was in the Lingua documentation but not in the
- documentation for the basic program. He allowed as to how, since practically
- everyone uses some TSR's or other and switches between programs, that
- maybe they should have put it in the basic documentatin as well.
-
- He also suggested putting the CTRL+ALT+ESC and CTRL+ESC secquenses on the
- TSR hotkey sequence. I haven't taken the time yet to think about how to
- actually do that.
-
- At any rate, I hope this helps some of the rest of you.
