  34. THE  1993  NATIONAL  CONFERENCE  on  PROBLEM  SOLVING  ACROSS THE
  35. CURRICULUM  will be held at Hobart  and William Smith Colleges in
  36. Geneva,  New  York,  June  24-26, 1993.    The  conference offers
  37. opportunities  to exchange  ideas about  teaching problem solving
  38. and  critical thinking in ALL curriculum areas.  Presentations in
  39. the following areas are suggested:
  40.  
  41.                      The Expanded Classroom
  42.             Total Quality Management in the Classroom
  43.       Planning, Implementing and Institutionalizing Change
  44.            Problem Solving Using Electronic Networking
  45.   Challenging the Standards in Writing, Mathematics and Science
  46.                    The Non-Traditional Student
  47.               Modeling the Problem Solving Process
  48.         Developing Learning Skills in the Core Curriculum
  49.                       Cooperative Learning
  50.                  Faculty Mentoring/Team Teaching
  51.                Teaching Styles and Learning Styles
  52.                   Writing Across the Curriculum
  53.      Critical Thinking and Non-Quantitative Problem Solving
  54.  
  55. Proposals for four types of presentations are requested:
  56.  
  57. 1)   20-minute     discussions/demonstrations     of    classroom
  58.      innovations,  faculty development activities, and results of
  59.      educational  research.   Use of  instructional technology is
  60.      strongly  encouraged in  these sessions.   Need  for special
  61.      hardware or software requirments should be specified.
  62.  
  63. 2)   90-minute  workshops  focusing on  classroom implementation.
  64.      These  workshops are intended to be hands-on sessions for 10
  65.      -  15 participants to explore curriculum materials and novel
  66.      delivery  techniques.  Computer labs  and seminar rooms will
  67.      be   available   for   workshops.      Available   computing
  68.      environments  include  VAX/VMS, MS-DOS,  Macintosh platforms
  69.      and Bitnet/Internet access.

  71. 3)   Directed   discussions/brainstorming  sessions  centered  on
  72.      specific problems in higher education.  Presenters will open
  73.      the  session by reviewing the  problem and then facilitating
  74.      discussion.     These   sessions  will   take  place  during
  75.      conference luncheons.

  77. 4)   Posters for the Hall of Innovation, described below.

  79.                            GUIDELINES
  80.  
  81. Prospective  presenters must  submit a  75-word abstract suitable
  82. for   the  conference  program  booklet   by  January  15,  1993,
  83. preferably  by  disk in  WordPerfect 5.1  form.   Receipt  of all
  84. abstracts will be acknowledged.  Final decisions on acceptance of
  85. presentation  proposals will  be made  by February  15, 1993; all
  86. authors  will be notified.  Final  papers for the 1993 conference
  87. proceedings  must be submitted by April  1, 1993, also by disk in
  88. WordPerfect 5.1 form.

  90. The "Hall of Innovation" is a gallery display of curriculum ideas
  91. and  effective  techniques  for teaching  problem  solving.   All
  92. presenters are invited to exhibit in poster form a description of
  93. their  presentation. Each poster will include a photograph of the
  94. presenter  and  a  description of  the  innovation.   Exceptional
  95. poster  displays will be recognized  during the conference awards
  96. dinner.   [Materials will be supplied for those wishing to create
  97. a  poster during the conference;  polaroid pictures will be taken
  98. upon arrival at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.]
