- Patty, at Ball State we're experimenting with a new "jumbo" version of
- our first writing requirement. Before, students who tested into our
- Basic Writing program had to take an extra class as a prerequisite to
- our two-semester English requirement. Students hated it, because they
- got no grade (it was pass/not pass) and they didn't get credit toward
- graduation. Now students who test into Basic Writing take a
- two-semester long course in place of the first semester English
- requirement. Students have the same instructor for the entire two
- semesters, so there's a sense of continuity, and they get credit
- towards graduation. It's working well so far (we're finishing the
- first semester) but I can keep you posted if you like.
