- Mark Emmons, a self-described inexperienced and naive reference librarian,
- couldn't have said it better --he articulated my thoughts exactly
- Campbell's article on reference service. In fact, his comments made
- me realize why I didn't make a personal copy of the article int he
- first place when that issue of RSR was routed to me: Campbell had
- so completely misunderstood reference service that his suggestions
- for "modernizing" reference were not worth saving. I would, however,
- go one step farther than Mark and suggest that it is imperative for
- reference librarians to take the lead in applying electronic
- technologies to patron/client service -- otherwise we will have to
- put up with electronic "fixes" imposed by technocrats to problems
- that weren't there in the first place. And in fact we are already
- doing this -- for evidence just search the archives of LIBREF-L.
-
- Thanks, Mark, for some cogent comments!
