- I was reminded of the following by J.E.H. Shaw telling of an experience he
- had in Foyle's bookstore in London. Years ago one of the prized possessions
- of senior graduate students and junior faculty was Siegel's "Non-parametric
- Statistics". I had a copy and it went missing from my office in St. John's
- Newfoundland one fall. The following spring we were on holiday in London and
- staying with some friends in Enfield. I did virtually nothing but go
- around to bookstores both new and used, so I was over-dosed on the activity.
- On the day before we were to return to Canada my friend said he was going
- to go to Dillon's bookstore (near the University of London) and asked me if
- I would join him. I practically regurgitated at the thought but he pressed
- me and I went along. So I dutifully trudged up to the used section on
- one of the upper floors and browsed. Almost the first thing that struck my
- eye was a copy of Siegel's "Non-parametric Statistics". I said to myself,
- "I must buy that to replace the one that somebody stole from me." When I
- picked it up, sure enough it was my own copy. I showed it to the manager
- along with the signaure on my passport and after a moment of embarassment
- they gave it back to me. The location of the find told me, by the way, who
- had stolen it. The sequel, after being on my shelf for maybe a year or so
- after that, the book disappeared again. I haven't stumbled on it yet. Has
- anybody seen it? Australia perhaps?
