- Mortensen Library at the University of Hartford has a PA system. It is used
- ONLY for the announcements of closing or an actual medical emergency (a life-
- threatening one, not a broken leg).Closing announcements are made at the half-
- and quarter-hour before closing, at five minutes before and at closing time.
- During finals, as many announcements are made at our 2:00 A.M. closing as are
- required to clear the building.
- True medical emergencies are rare. The person requesting the page in that
- circumstance is informed that there are many accoustically dead spots in the
- library so his party may not hear the announcement even if he is in the
- building.
- We used to page during fire alarms, but the blare of the alarm horn made the
- message difficult for anyone to decipher. Additionally, Public Safety asked
- that library staff leave the building as soon as possible and leave the
- evacuation to them.
- There are so many other sources of noise in any library that we are firm about
- enforcing our limiting policy for the use of the PA system, in deference to
- the studious among us.
