- I am interested in how academic computer centers provide
- statistical and database support. I'm looking for a brief description,
- including the size of your university and the size of your computing
- center and the number of user service staff, both full-time and any
- part-time and/or student consultants, and the computer platform and
- statistical and database software you support, how many statistical/db
- support folks there are, how the fit into the rest of the center, etc.
- I have provided a example of what I'm looking for by describing our
- center and stat/db support.
- RE: Statistical and Database Support
- Size: 6800 students, 32 member staff, 9 User Services Staff members
- with 3 20-hr-a-week graduate assistants
- Support: SAS, SPSSX, BMDP, MINITAB, IMSL, LISREL, LINDO
- very little on the DB front except Paradox, FileMaker Pro
-
- There is one consultant that deals with statistical packages (that is,
- the running of them). He does not attempt to do statistical consulting
- as in which procedure to apply. That is left up to the individual
- faculty members. In addition, this person supports communications
- (Kermit, etc.), some general DOS situations and a number of mainframe
- systems (VM/CMS, MUSIC and some VMS). We are pretty thinly stretched
- in this area.
-
- FYI, the other U.S. staff members do the following:
-
- 1 Manager (how useful are they?)
- 1 HELP Desk Attendant
- 2 DOS network maintenance and support (quasi-systems level)
- 1 General DOS support
- 1.5 MAC network maintenance and support
- .5 General Mac Support
- .5 MUSIC Mainframe support
- .5 Scanning and Source Library Maintenance
