  21. I think people probably have received long shrift, but that it's not
  22. been worth noting.  "Shrift" is the noun form of the verb "to shrive",
  23. or "to absolve from one's sins"; one who receives "short shrift" is
  24. thus given only a brief period before death (and, I suspect, a violent
  25. death) before being sent to meet her or his Maker.
