"Sprucing up" is standard usage. On the other hand,
a) I'd drop "background" in that sentence, as it doesn't really mean much.
b) I'd limit line length to 80 characters. 8-)
If this is a sentence to be put in some formal document, e.g., the cover
letter for your resume', don't use "spruce up," as it's a fairly informal
