  30. The image of Christ with a bleeding heart is common in Catholic religious
  31. texts such as those little sheets of paper you get when you light a candle in
  32. church.
  33. The standard image is a portrait of Christ w/halo and a bleeding heart
  34. suspended in the air in front of or above Christ. The heart usually has a
  35. crown of thorns around it.

  37. For the metaphorically impaired, this refers to the idea that Christ suffered
  38. and died for us.

  40. A "bleeding heart" is someone who suffers or goes through torment so that
  41. others, who may not deserve it, can benefit.

  43. It is ironic that the absent referent in "Bleeding-Heart-Liberal" is
  44. Christ. In America, Conservatives are superficially associated with
  45. religious values (usually Protestant). This connection is misleading,
  46. it has been invoked by extreme-right-wing politcal interests in order
  47. to legitimize their beliefs and actions.

  49. Pat Robertson-oids, Christan Colalition, Crusaders-for-Christ, right to
  50. lifers, and the rest of the ilk are not religious organizations! they contrive
  51. "Christian" justification for their political beliefs and then pass the
  52. wicker basket to the dopes that have taken the bait.

  54. These ultra-right-wing organizations cannot function without this fake
  55. religious aura, because they would be seen for what they really are:
  56. ignorant backwards rednecks.

  58. Sometimes, however, little slips in rhetoric (such as calling someone a
  59. "bleeding heart liberal" ) reveal some interesting truths. These are left
  60. as an exercise for the reader.
