- I know that as hard as it is to create one of these ads, it's even harder to
- respond to one. Too many original postings seem to contain only a small amount
- of general information, leaving it up to the respondent to do all the work to
- appear interesting. So, my posting mostly consists of paragraphs about me and
- the things I enjoy that I felt would best help you decide whether I'm someone
- you'd find interesting, and would provide some topics about which you could
- write if you did. (The "heavy" subjects like values and politics can wait til
- later.) If you find my ad boring or dull, that's fine -- I'm probably just not
- the type of person who would interest you. If you do find something of
- interest to you here, I sincerely hope you'll write back.
-
- ==============================================================================
-
- Curriculum vitae:
-
- I'm 32 years old, about 5'7", brown hair, brown eyes. (If you really care
- about physical attributes, I have a photo of myself that I can mail to you as
- a GIF file.) I live in the San Fernando Valley and work for a very large
- (and rapidly shrinking) computer company as a software consultant. I can't
- say I'm always thrilled about the type of work I do, but it's sometimes
- interesting and it pays fairly well. What I'm looking for is a woman with
- whom I can spend the rest of my life. That may sound a bit presumptuous, but
- it's essentially the truth. I'm not a non-commital kind of person, and I
- would like very much to be married if I could meet the right woman.
- Unfortunately, my work relegates me to mostly government and aerospace sites,
- where there are precious few eligible, interesting women to be found.
- (Frankly, I don't find many interesting people of either gender at most of
- the places I work. Even if I did, I get moved around from site to site so
- often that I don't really have time to get to know anybody.) Since I don't
- seem to meet many women in the daily course of my life, I'm trying
- alternative channels such as this one. I have no "shopping list" to define
- the type of woman I'm searching for -- I'm not concerned with your age or
- physical attributes or income or line of work or level of education or
- anything else. If you feel like you'd like to respond to this ad, that's
- all the "qualifications" I'm looking for. I'm basically a very private,
- quiet person who enjoys simple things and doesn't like crowds and noise.
- The rest of this ad consists of some things about myself I've jotted down to
- give you a better idea of who I am:
-
- o I have a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Texas, even
- though I'm a life-long Californian. Ever since I graduated and came
- back to California, I've been taking night classes at the local
- university. I have no particular aim or degree in mind -- I just sign up
- for courses that interest me because I truly enjoy learning. Usually I
- take English classes, with a science course or two thrown in here and
- there. (I was heartbroken to find out that my very favorite English
- professor accepted a retirement offer over the summer in order to make
- room for some of the younger teachers who had been laid off due to
- California's budget crisis. If this keeps up, there may not be any more
- classes for me to take in the future.)
-
- o I have a large collection of stuffed bears that continually threatens to
- overrun my apartment. The main portion of my collection is a complete
- set of the North American Bear Company's VIBs (Very Important Bears) that
- I've painstakingly collected over the past ten years or so. (You've
- probably seen these bears around in stores: they're about 20" tall, come
- in various colors, and they're always dressed to resemble famous real and
- fictional characters, such as Albeart Einstein and Beary Poppins and
- Abearham Lincoln, to name a few.) I also have a burgeoning Lego exhibit
- (mostly castles and pirates) taking up more of my ever-decreasing living
- space).
-
- o I'm very much a fan of anything Disneyana-related. I get out to
- Disneyland as often as I can (and other amusement parks as well, but not
- nearly as often), and I even know someone who graciously allows me to use
- his membership to bring guests to dine at the secretive Club 33 (which
- carries the added bonus of free admission). I usually go to a few
- Disneyana sales each year, although I don't have nearly enough money to
- buy everything I'd like to collect, so I have to content myself with
- smaller items such as posters and pins and books and such. Each year
- the annual Teddy Bear & Doll Convention is held at Disney World in
- December, and I'm looking forward to going this year (preferably not
- solo again, though). Frankly, I don't really care about hobnobbing with
- other bear makers and collectors, but many companies make special bears
- sold only at this convention, and they become sufficiently valuable to
- make the trip worthwhile. Besides, it's a good excuse for going to
- Disney World, and at a pretty good price to boot.
-
- o I read as much as I can, but not nearly as much as I'd like (outside
- activites like working and commuting really cut into my reading time).
- Since I mostly read in fits and spurts, most of what I read is magazines.
- I subscribe to just about every major magazine there is, but I don't
- usually have time to do more than skim through them, picking out the
- articles I find most interesting. I read every issue of _The New Yorker_
- no matter what, though (and _The New Republic_ as well, because it's thin
- and has fairly short articles). When I read books I generally prefer
- non-fiction, but I read anything that interests me. I managed to plow
- through Melville's first three books as a way of killing time in hotels
- and airports during business trips this summer. (I'm trying to read my
- way through The Library of America, and the first volume happened to be
- Melville's first three novels. I have some sort of compulsion about
- reading things in chronological order.)
-
- o I enjoy going to the movies as often as time permits. I don't mind if I
- have to skip seeing a "light" movie until it comes out on video or
- laserdisc, but prefer to experience more "serious" films on the big
- screen whenever possible. I frequent the Laemmle Theatre in Encino in
- order to watch foreign and off-beat films that don't seem to be shown
- anywhere else around here, and sometimes I go out to the Beverly Center
- or the Westside Pavilion to see movies that don't make it out here at
- all. I don't watch television all that much: I have a few shows that I
- like to watch here and there, but ever since the demise of "St.
- Elsewhere" there isn't really anything that it upsets me to miss (with
- the possible exception of "Mystery Science Theater 3000" ). I do listen
- to the radio quite a bit, but usually talk radio or NPR rather than
- music stations.
-
- o I'm not really much of a sports nut, with the exception of baseball.
- I've been a Dodgers fan since I was nine years old, and I follow them
- closely and attend about or dozen or so games a year. Even *my* interest
- is somewhat slackened in a season like the one they're having this year,
- though. I usually go to a few USC or UCLA basketball or football games
- each year as well (preferably when they're playing each other, since I
- grew up as a USC fan). Generally, though, I don't watch sports on
- television unless it involves one of the local teams, and even then only
- if they're having a good year. Sports is something I can take or leave:
- it's okay in limited quantities.
-
-
- I hope you found something of interest in this random noodling of mine. If
- so, please drop me a line; if not, thanks for at least reading this far, and
- I wish you well.
