- Not necessarily true.
-
- Let me illustrate. I've been doing a favour for a friend recently. She's
- completely computer-illiterate, to the point that's rare in society
- today -- she had _literally_ never touched a computer keyboard before.
- My mission: to get her a word processor ``sufficiently powerful''
- for the next few years (she's a writer) and teach her to use it.
- I was lucky enough to be able to put together an old Mac kit -- mac plus,
- imagewriter, external hard disk -- for a stupidly small amount of money. I
- then had to figure out how to teach a total computer illiterate to get
- the thing out of a box, plug everything in, use Microsoft Word, and
- back up their data -- in three hours.
-
- I succeeded.
-
- Thing is, it was _impossible_ to plug anything in in a way that could
- damage it; the only problem is the risk of plugging the printer into the
- modem socket. Big deal -- all that happens is it doesn't print until
- you tell them to look in the chooser.
-
- Compare this to the average PC and ... well, I'm a convert. And I grew
- up on PC's.
-
- Peeve: _I_ had to do a degree in computer science to learn how to
- plug a printer in. (And I'm still a bit Unclear on the Concept when
- it comes to lp queues ...)
