  11. I didn't really expect to get any research done on this topic, but much
  12. to my surprise when I went home on Friday, I found the most terrific
  13. childbirth and child rearing book catalog sitting on the kitchen table.  It
  14. turns out that one of my housemates sometimes teaches childbirth classes,
  15. and so is on this mailing list.  The following is a list of books that
  16. looked interesting.  I'm going to stop by the library tonight and
  17. see what I can pick up, and I'll probably order a few of these.  I haven't
  18. read any of these yet, so I don't know if they are as good as they look.
  19. If there's any interest, I'll post more thorough reviews/info after I've
  20. had a chance to look at whatever ones I find.  The descriptions come from the 
  21. catalog.  Sorry, it didn't include publisher information for most of these.
  22. My housemate said that books chosen for this catalog are usually accurate
  23. and useful.

  25. _History of Childbirth_ by Jaques Gelis, 1991.  The author reconstructs the
  26. system of practices, beliefs and taboos that surrounded conception, pregnancy
  27. and birth.

  29. _Childbirth Wisdom from the World's Oldest Societies_ by Judith Goldsmith, 
  30. 1991.  The author provides a fascinating study of childbirth in cultures 
  31. around the world.

  33. _Cultural Warping of Childbirth_ by Doris Haire, 1972.  Thought provoking
  34. analysis of various maternity practices and their effects on mother, infant,
  35. and families.  Reprinted in 1985.

  37. _Visualizations for an Easier Childbirth_ by Carl Jones, 1988.  Teaches the 
  38. expectant mother to mentally prepare for baby's birth to achieve the experience
  39. desired.

  44. of pregnant women and their causes.  Five step program for understanding

  48. _Natural Pregnancy_ by Janet Balaskas, 1991.  Clear and simple guide to an
  49. enjoyable pregnancy, encouraging the use of natural or alternative means
  50. of achieving a problem-free pregnancy.

  52. _Healing Yourself During Pregnancy_ by Joy Gardner, 1987.  Presents natural
  53. and herbal cures for more than thirty common complaints women may have from
  54. conception through pregnancy and breastfeeding.

  57. infertility, child development, and had technical reference books geared to
  58. OB's and midwifes.  It's called the ICEA Bookmarks (International
  59. Childbirth Education Association), PO Box 20048, Minneapolis Minnesota
  60. 55420.  It's available to non-members.  (Although I get to order on my
  61. housemate's order form and get her member discount, lucky me.)  Membership
  62. is $20, and includes a 10% discount on books.
