- There have been several mentions of Kodak selling source code for Photo CD for
- $100,000. These originated with someone not connected with Kodak and have been
- repeated by others not connected with Kodak.
-
- I have inquired about this. To my knowledge, and that of the managers in the
- Photo CD community with whom I spoke, there is no provision for the sale of
- source code for Photo CD for $100,000.
-
- Perhaps this confusion is caused by the fact that Kodak DOES sell a product
- called the Photo CD Imaging Workstation (PIW). Although there are a couple of
- configurations for PIWs, the basic price is $100,000. A PIW is the device used
- by a photofinisher or professional photo lab to transfer slides, negatives, or
- (in December) photographic prints, to Photo CD discs.
-
- The PIW consists of the following:
- Photo CD scanner, made by Kodak and scanning at high resolution and speed
- Sun Sparcstation with Kodak image processing boards and software
- CD-ROM drive to read discs
- Kodak PCD Writer 200 to write Photo CD discs
- Kodak XL 7700 thermal printer to make Photo CD index prints and reprint
- enlargements.
-
- The (approximately) $100,000 figure purchases this workstation, along with the
- rights to produce Kodak branded Photo CD discs.
-
- Kodak makes other arrangements for incorporation of Photo CD capabilities into
- system software. An example of this is the recent introduction of QuickTime
- version 1.5 on the Mac. This makes accessing a Photo CD image in any of its
- five resolutions as simple as double-clicking.
