- Well, as a graduate of UW-Madison, I have to take issue with this. First
- of all, please notice that Robert is from UW-Eau Claire, not the main campus
- in Madison.
-
- But secondly, let me note that Wisconsin does indeed have a very well-respected
- and high-profile space studies program. UW has, in fact, contributed a number
- of instruments for space satellite missions (most notably, an instrument for
- the Hubble Space Telescope and WUPPE (Wisconsin Ultraviolet Photo-Polarimetry
- Experiment?) that flew aboard the space shuttle not long ago (as part of
- ASTRO-1? I don't exactly recall).
-
- There are no doubt numerous other examples; I recall at least a couple with
- insufficient clarity to recite them here.
-
- I realize it's easy to toss out such a criticism; but it is a little-known
- fact that the University of Wisconsin is a nationally high-ranking institu-
- tion in a wide variety of areas, and is annually in the top ten in terms of
- grant monies received (number 4 last year, if I recall properly).
-
- I think you'll find that, in fact, Wisconsin *is* known for its brilliant
- space studies program.
