- Another reason to hone cylinders is piston clearance. On my research/
- race engine, each cylinder is honed to so that there is a .004 inch
- (+/- .0005) clearance between the widest point of the piston (cheapie
- TRW forged pistons... have a couple of thousands taper on them :( )
- and the cylinder walls. Each cylinder is honed with respect to the
- size of the piston that goes in it (not that the piston vary that much,
- but .001 can mean the difference between siezing one and not).
- Maybe what the orginal poster's friend meant was that race blocks are
- not rehoned--if the cylinders still have a nice crosshatch on them,
- theres no need to open them up any more.
