  23. Another reason to hone cylinders is piston clearance.  On my research/
  24. race engine, each cylinder is honed to so that there is a .004 inch
  25. (+/- .0005) clearance between the widest point of the piston (cheapie
  26. TRW forged pistons...  have a couple of thousands taper on them :( )
  27. and the cylinder walls.  Each cylinder is honed with respect to the
  28. size of the piston that goes in it (not that the piston vary that much,
  29. but .001 can mean the difference between siezing one and not).  
  30. Maybe what the orginal poster's friend meant was that race blocks are
  31. not rehoned--if the cylinders still have a nice crosshatch on them,
  32. theres no need to open them up any more.
