- Back in 81 we bought a GM 350 target-master engine. It was a plain-jane
- affair which came with heads and intake manifold so installation was
- easy. Engine cost $1200 and they wanted $1000 for installation.
- My dad (who bought it) was fairly conservative talked them down
- a few hundred and had them do it anyway. It ran ok using the old
- carb/trans/etc. There are other places in town who specialize in
- installing rebuilt engines for slightly less. The GM warranty was
- the same as those offered by the rebuild houses. If it had been my
- car I would have either bought the target-master or rebuilt the old
- one myself. It's too easy for rebuilders to cheet on rebuilts
- (unless you know a good one). There are machine shops arround here
- who you can literally drive the car into them and they will rebuild
- it for you in a few days. Since they work on a parts & labor basis,
- there is less motivation to use a potential problem part. On the
- other hand, they may try to persuade you to add performance parts.
