- I'd say that you're right in most cases. Sometimes though the writer
- a) doesn't have the skill to state what s/he knows concisely and
- clearly, even though well in command of the subject material
-
- b) is so conditioned by bad technical and academic writing that s/he
- feels compelled to write poorly, since that's the way all of the
- textbooks and articles in the field are apparently written
-
- c) feels that to state a complicated principle simply denies its
- complexity
-
- d) feels that s/he will lose credibility if stating complicated or
- esoteric material in a clear manner.
-
- I've often found in my own writing that some reviewers who are
- accomplished subject matter experts *resent* it when topics that may
- have taken them years to explore and grasp completely are demystified in
- a deliberate and clear way in writing. They tend to want to inject
- excessive words, change the voice, and so on, to make it more difficult
- for the reader to grasp.
-
- Also, a lot of people never had anything explained simply and clearly to
- them, so they don't know any better, even if they do understand the
- topic at hand completely.
