- It seems that most writers here are using the Mac for a lot of writing and
- note-taking. For those of us using IBM's (or clones) there's another
- indespensible program that I;ve been using for the past several years as a
- note-taker, database, memopad, reminder, etc.
- The program is called Memory Mate, and it's by Broderbund. Cost in Canada
- was in the order of 75 bucks, and worth every penny.
- The secret to Memory Mate is that it's a Free-form database. You can create
- as many Databases as you want, then enter thousands of records. Although
- you can structure the Database into fields I find it's better to just type
- in the information and call it up when you need it. You don't have to index
- anything. It'll recognize any search you ask it to do. I've even created a
- database of Recipes extracted from rec.food.cooking (about 1300 of them),
- then when I want a recipe for some specific meal I can get it easily. Or
- let's say I have chicken and tomatoes and green pepper and I want to cook
- something for dinner with those ingredients. I merely ask it to search for
- 'chicken and tomatoes and green peppers' and it gives me every recipe which
- would fit the bill.
- What makes Memory mate especially appealing is the fact that it's a TSR.
- When you install it you can add it as a TSR in your autoexec.bat file, then
- if you happen to be in Word Perfect and you need some info for a piece
- you're writing just hit 'Alt-Z' and you're in.
- Memory Mate is a DOS program, and I asked Broderbund just last week if they
- were planning a Windows version of it. They replied that at the moment they
- weren't, but would add my comments to the others who had called requesting
- a Windows version.
- Memory Mate is definitely one of the very best programs I've ever used. I
- was so impressed with it that I recommended it be used by several
- departments of the company I work for. The suggestion was taken and Memory
- Mate has proven to be one of the most used programs we have.
- On a scale of 10 it's a 10+.
- By the way....anyone out there familiar with Info-Select? As Broderbund
- isn't planning a Windows version of MM, I'm looking for a Windows program
- into which I can import the MemoryMate data.
