  11. It seems that most writers here are using the Mac for a lot of writing and 
  12. note-taking. For those of us using IBM's (or clones) there's another 
  13. indespensible program that I;ve been using for the past several years as a 
  14. note-taker, database, memopad, reminder, etc.
  15. The program is called Memory Mate, and it's by Broderbund. Cost in Canada 
  16. was in the order of 75 bucks, and worth every penny.
  17. The secret to Memory Mate is that it's a Free-form database. You can create 
  18. as many Databases as you want, then enter thousands of records. Although 
  19. you can structure the Database into fields I find it's better to just type 
  20. in the information and call it up when you need it. You don't have to index 
  21. anything. It'll recognize any search you ask it to do. I've even created a 
  22. database of Recipes extracted from rec.food.cooking (about 1300 of them), 
  23. then when I want a recipe for some specific meal I can get it easily. Or 
  24. let's say I have chicken and tomatoes and green pepper and I want to cook 
  25. something for dinner with those ingredients. I merely ask it to search for 
  26. 'chicken and tomatoes and green peppers' and it gives me every recipe which 
  27. would fit the bill.
  28. What makes Memory mate especially appealing is the fact that it's a TSR. 
  29. When you install it you can add it as a TSR in your autoexec.bat file, then 
  30. if you happen to be in Word Perfect and you need some info for a piece 
  31. you're writing just hit 'Alt-Z' and you're in. 
  32. Memory Mate is a DOS program, and I asked Broderbund just last week if they 
  33. were planning a Windows version of it. They replied that at the moment they 
  34. weren't, but would add my comments to the others who had called requesting 
  35. a Windows version.
  36. Memory Mate is definitely one of the very best programs I've ever used. I 
  37. was so impressed with it that I recommended it be used by several 
  38. departments of the company I work for. The suggestion was taken and Memory 
  39. Mate has proven to be one of the most used programs we have.
  40. On a scale of 10 it's a 10+.
  41. By the way....anyone out there familiar with Info-Select? As Broderbund 
  42. isn't planning a Windows version of MM, I'm looking for a Windows program 
  43. into which I can import the MemoryMate data.
