- I've been checking out the indexing routines in 4.0, which were not in
- the betas I evaluated. I'm happy to report that they work more rapidly
- and more elegantly than 3.0. However, users should be aware of the
- following issue. There seems to be size limit to the number of files
- NB can index at one time. When we indexed the second edition of our
- cultural anth text--about 1.2 meg--with NB3, we had to break it up
- into three sets of chapters and then merge them together in ways that]
- I prefer to forget. I hd hoped that 4.0 would have solved that problem.
- But no. I tried indexing the entire book at once, and the indexer choked.
- I had to use exactly the same three .LNK files that I had used with 3.0.
- (This may be a memory limitation. I may try to set the sort default to
- 5 characters rather than 40. I did try 20, but that may not be enough.
- It may even be a DOS problem).
-
- The good news is that NB4 makes generating indexes in chunks exceptionally
- easy. Beyond that, using column define and the upper case command should
- allow almost instantaneous capitalization of the initial letter (assuming
- that your style manual requires that). So, I'm very pleased by the improve-
- mets in the indexing routines.
