- While you folks Out There are gurgling away (or is it gasping and
- strangling sounds I hear?!) over v. 4, I wonder whether I might
- disturb you for a moment....
-
- I have recently had my v. 3.0 upgraded to 3.1. Now I find that,
- firstly, the help screens when the speller runs are corrupted ("Leave
- word exactly as is?" is corrupted, and the "double occurrence" screen
- is repaced by some of the text in a frame); and secondly, that the
- speller runs agonisingly slowly - this is something really
- pathological, for it used to be fast and it is now so slow as to make
- the speller virtually pointless: it is quicker to proof-read. I have
- the advantage of English English and it also notices when two words
- are run together, but the combination of the corrupt help screens and
- slow operation suggest that there is something awry.
-
- I have a dim recollection of someone saying something about 3.1's
- speller being able to use higher memory above 640K, and that this
- would speed up operation. I hasten to add that I am getting my head
- around the difference between expanded and extended memory, and that I
- am not referring to these; and in any event my problems do not relate
- to them as they occur on both a 1M and a 5M RAM'ed machine.
-
- Is this correct; and if it is, how is the magic wrought? The two
- matters be be inter-related.
-
- Good luck to all you v. 4'ers - may the Great Dragonfly hover over you
- and all your works!
