- Re: Orbis and recognition of accented characters
-
- Orbis does not recognize accented charactaers written by previous
- versions of Nota Bene, if run in NBLINGUA mode. The reason is that
- accented characters in NBLINGUA are combinations of 3 (three) bytes:
- ASCII 255+2 other characters. When you look for such a combination,
- no wonder you do not find it...
-
- (The 3 bytes combinations, however ingenuous, are a source of MANY
- troubles. This is what happens when you use a complicated solution
- for a problem: you solve one problem, but you create two new ones.)
-
- However, if you run NB 4.0 in monolingual mode, i.e., if you load
- the regular NB 4.0 version (non-lingua), then Orbis WILL find all
- accented characters.
-
- If you do not have to use NBLINGUA when working with Orbis, go
- over to using 4.0 monolingual. If you have already installed
- NBLINGUA, you must install one more copy of NB 4.0, in a
- separate subdirectory, in order to produce NB.COM. Copy this
- file to your NB 4.0 subdirectory UNDER A DIFFERENT NAME, then
- write a batch file which will allow loading one the NB 4.0
- either via NBlingua NB.COM, or via 4.0 NB.COM (use any switch
- you like). (No need to keep the extra version on disk; erase the
- temporary subdirectory after you have copied NB.COM under a new
- name to your NB 4.0 subdirectory.)
-
- I have not tested how Orbis treats accented charcaters created
- by NBlingua itself. But if such characters will be recognized,
- the complications will only grow... (NB will have to devise
- some procedures to recognize all of these combinations.)
-
- It is a pity that NBI never accepted my requests to make it
- possible to go back and forth between monolingual and multilingual
- environment. Evidently, they were afraid of 'complicating
- matters for the regular user'. But the reality is the very
- opposite: we now have to use such a clumsy method as having
- 2 different versions of NB.COM, and load NB in only one or the
- other mode.
-
- By the way: is there a way to copy the found items in Orbis
- to a file?
