- I experienced a problem with MVS/370 running under VM. The VM is
- VM/XA 2.1, I believe. We used to have only
- one MVS guest under VM - S33B running MVS/370 1.3.5. We since have added
- two additional guests - MVSXA and S33C running MVS/XA 2.2.3. When we had
- only S33B, its SYSRES and catalog volumes were DEDICATEd, and all of the
- various MVS disks were full volume minidisks owned by S33B. When we added
- the two XA virtual machines we decided to have all of the MVS volumes
- (SYSRESes, catalogs, system volumes, and user volumes) full volume minidisks
- owned by MVSXA. S33B and S33C would LINK to MVSXA's minidisks. When I tried
- to IPL S33B (MVS/370), the IPL got as far as "IEE360I SMF NOW RECORDING ON
- SYS1.MAN1 on CTG33B TIME=15:08:53". Then there were no MVS messages for a
- few minutes, followed by "IGF990I I/O REQUEST PENDING FOR DEVICE 122" and
- "IGF996E PROBABLE DEVICE FAILURE, CANNOT INITIATE I/O TO 122". I got a
- CP I/O trace on 122, but I have not had time to review it. We decided to
- go back and have each guest's SYSRES and catalog DEDICATEd; the problem went
- away.
-
- The drawback of this approach is that some volumes are unaccessible to some
- guests. For example, the MVSXA SYSRES volume, SMPXA1, is unaccessible to
- S33C; I cannot do any SMP/E work on S33C, as SMPXA1 has my global and target
- zones.
-
- Has anyone else experienced this? Is this something I can report to the
- IBM Support Center? Thanks.
