-
- IBM markets a CWIS in most parts of the world. It was part of a
- package of software announced in Canada and the USA as product number
- 5750-ACF and in Asia/Pacfic area (ie Japan, Austrialia, etc.)
- as product number 5756-011. There are more than 200 sites running
- this software supporting an estimated total userid count of 300,000
- users.
-
- Here are some key parts of the IBM announcement text (291-234)...
- The MUSIC/SP product provides applications to make it an ideal
- platform for a corporate or campus-wide information system.
- Electronic bulletin boards, conferencing and full text searching
- facilities work together to provide new applications for the host
- computer. It can be used for the development and execution of
- interactive applications using a variety of programming languages
- and tools, with electronic office functions including mail and
- scheduling. In addition, it can be used for the teaching of host
- and personal computing topics and languages. Users can
- optionally manage files in an hierarchical tree-structured
- manner, similar to that done on DOS, AIX, and UNIX systems.
- Connectivity to other systems is provided through TCP/IP, RSCS
- and PVM. These facilities allow it to provide an integrated
- host/workstation computing solution, attractive in environments
- which need to support many users doing diverse activities with
- minimum hardware and support costs. The product includes many
- features and facilities especially designed to meet the needs of
- universities, colleges and a variety of other schools. The
- software runs on processors utilizing System/370 architecture,
- including the Micro Channel 370, 937X, 43XX, 30XX and ES/9000.
-
- The system includes a sample CWIS as well as a manual dedicated
- to setting up and running a CWIS. It includes information on how
- data providers can directly update their information and directly
- receive feedback from the viewers of their data.
-
- Several CWIS's running on MUSIC/SP can be accessed via the Internet.
- To access the one running at McGill University,
- use a TELNET command that can handle 3270 data streams.
- (In VM, just use the TELNET command. In other systems
- it may be called TN3270.)
-
- Use Internet address of "VM1.MCGILL.CA"
- (The numeric address is 132.206.27.2)
-
- Hit ENTER to clear the VM/ESA logo screen
- Enter PF3 (or type "INFO") as the screen will prompt you.
-
- You should now be signed on to the "InfoMcGill" system.
-
- You can e-mail me directly if you want to know more about MUSIC/SP.
