  19. Once, when I was a teenager, way before there were hackers, I read
  20. a nice science fiction story that introduced me to the concept of
  21. a "silly season."  It used to take place in August -- flying
  22. saucers would land, space aliens would snatch people out for an
  23. afternoon walk, memories would fade, and dogs would foam at the
  24. mouth.  Then, about October, people would wonder whether it really
  25. happend, and sure enough, they would go to the library and pull out
  26. the papers and there it would all be, totally documented, totally
  27. undeniable.

  29. Maybe because of global warming, the hole in the ozone, electro-
  30. magnetic radiation from orbiting satellites, the season got longer
  31. and later.

  33. If it seems especially worse this year, it's because it's occuring
  34. during that quadrennial celebration call the Presidential Campaign.

  36. Not to worry, the geese are in the flyways, the snow is in the air,
  37. and it will all be over in 4 weeks.
