  13.      Yesterday, something unusual happened here that I need to find an
  14. explanation for, both for my own sake and that of others I will need
  15. to explain it to.  I'm posting to this list since MX, BITNET, and
  16. INTERNET are closely interrelated and I'm not sure wherein lie the
  17. origins of the problem.

  19. We created a new user with a 9 character username.  That user logged
  20. in and subscribed to a couple of mailing lists(both very active lists)
  21. and began receiving mail--well, almost began receiving mail.  The mail
  22. reached here just fine, but somewhere along the route, the username
  23. was truncated to 8 characters.  MX attempted to find the truncated
  24. username here, was unable to do so, generated an error reply, and sent
  25. it back where it came from.

  27. I fixed the problem by defining an alias for that user but began
  28. wondering/thinking about how many other usernames we have that are
  29. 8+ characters long and about the poor soul who replaces me when I decide
  30. to leave here who generates 1000 student usernames one semester that
  31. are each 10 characters long.  WOW !

  33. I need an explanation of why this is happening.  Is it related to
  34. BITNET, INTERNET, MX, all of the above, none of the above, or
  35. what ?  I've been aware for quite some time that the length of the
  36. POSTMAST(ER) account has been an issue but never had thought of it in
  37. terms of other usernames.  Is there a more convenient way to deal with
  38. the problem than having to remember to limit usernames to 8 or less
  39. characters or defining aliases ?  After all, VMS allows 12 character
  40. usernames.

  42. I noticed in earlier postings that someone had suggested sending
  43. bounced mail messages to the local postmaster also.  I think that's
  44. an excellent idea and am glad Hunter has agreed.  I only have time
  45. to look at MX occassionally and wouldn't have even noticed this
  46. problem if another user hadn't called me concerning another potential
  47. problem with MX.  I manage to log into the POSTMASTER account about
  48. once a day.
