- #1: WLFL-TV Fox 22 to broadcast RARS SAREX CONTACT LIVE!
-
- That's right -- Fox 22 will be set up at Cary High School to make a LIVE
- broadcast of our SAREX contact from that location. Depending on timing, we
- will pre-empt Romper Room or the Jetsons!
-
- Thanks, Fox 22!!!

- #2 "NASA SELECT" ON AMATEUR TV DURING NEXT WEEK'S SHUTTLE MISSION
-
- A special Amateur TV transmitter set-up at NC State will be transmitting
- "NASA Select TV" during most of the space shuttle's mission next week.
-
- AEA has loaned us their ATV transmitter/mast mounted amplifier combo. That
- will give us 50 big watts. The Center for Communications at MCNC will
- receive the downlink from the satellite, and use their microwave links to
- route the signal to the roof of the D.H. Hill library building at NC Stage.
- We'll take a feed at that point. MCNC will also transmit the signal on an
- instructional TV band to be received at the schools involved in SAREX.
-
- The transmitter will feed a VERTICALLY POLARIZED antenna temporarily
- mounted on the D.H. Hill roof.
-
- The video carrier frequency is 439.25 MHz., and YOU CAN RECEIVE IT WITH ANY
- CABLE-READY TV (and a good antenna). Here's how...
-
- Connect a very good UHF antenna, pointed at NC State, to the VHF input of
- your cable-ready TV. That's the VHF input -- not the UHF input. ALL
- "cable-channel" signals come in the VHF antenna port!
-
- Make sure the set is in the CABLE mode. Some sets call it "Antenna:
- TV-CABLE" or some such consumer-oriented confusion. Then tune the set to
- channel 60. That's CABLE 60, not UHF channel 60!
-
- Guess what actual frequency Cable channel 60 is....? That's right:
- 439.25! Right where our ATV will be.
-
- Now, most TV stations transmit with a million-plus watts ERP to your
- pathetic rabbit ears or bent UHF loop. We're gonna have maybe a hundred
- watts ERP. Will you be able to see it? Hey, that's the exciting part. At
- any distance from DH Hill, you will need a good antenna -- VERTICALLY
- POLARIZED (most ATV is horizontal, but we need to keep our installation
- simple, and a vertical is easiest).
-
- The signal should come up Monday, but maybe earlier over the weekend, and
- run most of the week. Let us know if you can see it!
-
- Note: it is illegal for Amateurs (including ATV) to retransmit other
- services. The FCC has issued a special waiver, and we are permitted to
- retransmit the NASA Select video.
-
- Happy Viewing.
