- Some prices there are OK, but some are waay up there in the orbit. While
- you can find some good deals after persistent browsing, be sure to do
- some comparison shopping beforehand.
-
- The owner's attitude was the singular factor that turned me off. A
- paraphrased conversation about some Exbury azalea hybrid.
-
- Me: Hmm, I like this azalea here, but $35 seems to be somewhat excessive.
- I've seen the same kind for about $20 elsewhere. What would you
- really sell it for?
-
- Bob: You're welcome to shop elsewhere. If I sold at the prices others
- do, I'd be out of business ...
- [and he continued in this style for a while - kk]
-
- Me: OK, goodbye. (thinking, "yeah, at these rates I guess if you find one
- sucker who pays what you want then you can afford loosing five
- customers. Sounds like a good business practice. Well, good luck,
- but you ain't having any with me").
-
- Also, they had some plants pitifully mislabeled. How would anybody manage
- to put a 'royal fern' label on what appears to be cinnamon fern, is utterly
- puzzling (royal ferns have *very* charactristic foliage).
-
- >Highly recommended.

- NOT

- For good deals, the Southern States coop is hard to beat (but the
- selection is smallish) - they are on Greensboro St. next to
- Harris-Teeter. A friend of mine swears by the main nursery of the
- Potted Plant (somewhere on Weaver Dairy Rd). Dickinson's on Franklin
- is OK. Largest selection in the Triangle is likely at the Taylor's
- Nursery in Raleigh - they are HUGE (but open weekdays 9-5 only). My
- favorite is Niche Gardens (1111 Dawson St in Chapel Hill, tel.
- 967-0078). They are average size, but have some fairly rare and
- interesting plants (like the japanese crepe myrtle - much nicer than
- the popular stuff one sees everywhere. Some really neat japanese CM can
- be seen in NCSU arboretum). They operate mostly in mail order mode,
- but have open house Thu-Sun for the next 6 weeks or so. Plants are
- mostly smallish, so it is not for an instant landscape, but are healthy
- and usually easy to propagate/multiply if one has patience to wait...
