  16. Well, I got lots of opinions on Rental Referral Pros and also 
  17. did a little digging, and the news is not good.

  19. First, the opinions: I didn't actually tally votes, but it
  20. seemed to me like I got about a dozen responses, with two
  21. saying "they're OK, but probably not worth the price" and
  22. ten saying "they're a total ripoff, don't use them!", phrased
  23. in various ways. I got many reports of dissatisfied customers;
  24. several complained that listings which looked great in the office
  25. were not great in reality, while others noted that some of the
  26. properties whose listings (e.g. in the Village Advocate) had 
  27. brought them to Rental Referral Pros in the first place were
  28. already rented the day after the ads appeared. This trend was
  29. confirmed by my own call to the company, when the agent I was 
  30. talking to admitted that many of the properties are already rented
  31. when the ad appears in the Village Advocate!

  33. That ratio alone would have been enough to convince me, but
  34. acting on a lead from one respondent, I gave the Better
  35. Business Bureau (BBB) a call...
  36.  
  37. The facts: In their current form, Rental Referral Pros (RRP)
  38. is a member in good standing of the BBB.  They have had some
  39. complaints lodged against them, but the complaints have been
  40. resolved.  However, RRP seems to be the new name of two local
  41. offices of American Rent Guide; the addresses in both Raleigh
  42. and Durham were the same as for RRP. American Rent Guide is
  43. currently under indictment by the N.C. Attorney General's
  44. office for a long list of violations, including fraudulent
  45. representation of rental properties, failure to honor contracts
  46. (presumably the contract between company and customer), and 
  47. other sneaky sales tactics.  If you call the BBB they will
  48. actually play a taped report over the phone so you can hear the
  49. story for yourself. American Rent Guide ceased operations in
  50. the Triangle area soon after the indictments were handed down
  51. (in November 1990 or '91, as I recall), and according to the
  52. BBB, Rental Referral Pros opened at the same addresses the
  53. following January, offering essentially the same services as 
  54. American Rent Guide as far as I can tell.

  56. So technically, RRP might be OK, but I'm staying a mile away
  57. from a company that has such close ties to a (allegedly)
  58. fraudulent organization.

  60. The most common recommendation was that instead of trusting
  61. RRP, I just keep looking in the Village Advocate, which is the
  62. approach I intend to take.
