  10. THE GREAT LAKES INFORMATION SERVICE is now available for ftp!

  12. Fact Sheets about various Great Lakes topics and issues, along with two
  13. years worth of new stories from the Great Lakes Reporter, can be found
  14. via anonymous ftp at nic.cic.net, in the subdirectory
  15. /pub/great-lakes/cgl (where you'll find a readme.txt file which explains
  16. and lists what's available in what subdirectory).

  18. Topics covered by Fact Sheets include Great Lakes water diversion, water
  19. quality, waterfront development, pollution prevention, regional and
  20. international agreements such as the Great Lakes Water QUality
  21. Agreement, and the effects of global warming on the Lakes.
  22. There are Fact Sheets on many of the 43 Great Lakes Areas of Concern,
  23. which are the worst toxic hotspots as designated by the two federal
  24. governments.

  26. The Great Lakes Reporter, a regional newsmagazine published by The
  27. Center for the Great Lakes, covers news, trends, and issues relating the
  28. environment of the Great Lakes ecosystem and the economy of the region,
  29. especially when they interact. You will find every major story that has 
  30. appeared in the Reporter since the start of 1990, listed by subject area
  31. with headlines for easy access and searching. Typical topics include
  32. coverage of the historic regional public meetings held in Traverse City
  33. in October 1991; trends in various key economic sectors around the
  34. Lakes; analysis of current water quality planning and activities by
  35. governments, industry and citizen's groups around the region; waterfront
  36. development aroound the Lakes; "invader" species such as the zebra
  37. mussel; the state and future of the Great Lakes' fishery; the status of
  38. proposals to divert Great Lakes water, and so forth.

  40. The Reporter is a part of the Great Lakes Information Service, a public
  41. service of The Center for the Great Lakes. This ftp access is the first
  42. step in a long-range plan to put the Information Service "on-line"; more
  43. Fact Sheets on more topics will be added, Reporter stories will be
  44. continuously added as they are published, existing Fact Sheets are
  45. periodically updated by Center researchers, and other useful and
  46. interesting things are being put on-line as we think of them
  47. (suggestions are welcome).
