- The 'culprit' I read about is the phosphate fertilizers used, which naturally
- contain a noticeable amount of uranium and/or thorium, and therefore their
- daughters. Tobacco is very efficient at absorbing one of these daughters
- (Po?). Most tobacco fields have used these fertilizers, and so just about all
- of it is affected. In addition U and Th aren't all that rare, many granites
- contain them, so soils derived from these granites contain them.
