  27. The 'culprit' I read about is the phosphate fertilizers used, which naturally
  28. contain a noticeable amount of uranium and/or thorium, and therefore their
  29. daughters.  Tobacco is very efficient at absorbing one of these daughters
  30. (Po?).  Most tobacco fields have used these fertilizers, and so just about all
  31. of it is affected.  In addition U and Th aren't all that rare, many granites
  32. contain them, so soils derived from these granites contain them.
