  18. I think you should get a katana.  Or a wakizashi if your apartment
  19. is particularly small.

  22.   No ammo required;
  23.   Unlikely to ever be declared illegal;
  24.   No waiting period;
  25.   Cheaper (if you buy a crummy modern replica);
  26.   Has pleasing history (if you buy an original);
  27.   Is likely to convince potential assailant that you are truly
  28.   psychotic and dangerous _much_ faster than either a shotgun or .45;
  29.   If you're at all graceful, much more lethal than either a 
  30.   shotgun or .45 at any range inside 20 feet;
  31.   Ladies or gentlemen carry swords.

  34.   More expensive (if you buy an original);
  35.   Requires some practise, especially if you want to get the iai
  36.   draw (quick-draw) down;
  37.   Bad against an assailant who has a gun _AND_ is standing more
  38.   than 25 feet away (again, if your apartment is small, not a problem.)

  43. defense for years.  Just haven't been able to convince myself it's
  44. not an extravagance -- the crime rate is pretty low here, on average.
