- I think you should get a katana. Or a wakizashi if your apartment
- is particularly small.
-
- Advantages:
- No ammo required;
- Unlikely to ever be declared illegal;
- No waiting period;
- Cheaper (if you buy a crummy modern replica);
- Has pleasing history (if you buy an original);
- Is likely to convince potential assailant that you are truly
- psychotic and dangerous _much_ faster than either a shotgun or .45;
- If you're at all graceful, much more lethal than either a
- shotgun or .45 at any range inside 20 feet;
- Ladies or gentlemen carry swords.
-
- Disadvantages:
- More expensive (if you buy an original);
- Requires some practise, especially if you want to get the iai
- draw (quick-draw) down;
- Bad against an assailant who has a gun _AND_ is standing more
- than 25 feet away (again, if your apartment is small, not a problem.)

- : you probably think i'm making this up but i'm not
-
- ditto. I've been trying to talk myself into buying one for home
- defense for years. Just haven't been able to convince myself it's
- not an extravagance -- the crime rate is pretty low here, on average.
