  13. Way back on 13 May 1992 [so I'm a slow reader], Johnathan Vail posted,
  14. in talk.bizarre, in response to Rich White's request for help choosing
  15. from among the losers on the California Democratic Party sample
  16. presidential ballot:

  23. With such a groundswell of support, it could be time to make a go for
  24. it, if for no other reason than to watch rissa start to foam at the
  25. mouth again. It's a little late, and I don't have a real news reading
  26. account, but at least when the IRS comes to drag me away I can scream
  27. "it's a Republican plot to suppress viable candidates", like LaRouche
  28. did when they jailed him on tax charges, so let's put out a little
  29. feeler here:

  31. USENet, and more generally the global net, is one of the greatest
  32. untapped political resources in the world. It has access to millions of
  33. people in offices with access to all the latest yuppie desktop
  34. publishing software and copying equipment needed to mount a campaing
  35. among the non-netted folks.

  37. It has access to millions of strong legged, strong lunged college kids
  38. with time on their hands and the youth and enthusiasm to make a
  39. difference if only there were a political cause to attract their
  40. allegiance.
  41.  
  42. It communicates faster and more reliably than any telephone system or
  43. broadcast news system.
  44.  
  45. There are enough US participants that if each of them convinced 100
  46. voters to join them, their cause would win overwhelmingly.
  47.  
  48. So, there is this in-joke of a political party called the Birthright
  49. Party.
  50.  
  51. The cause it espouses is the saving of the human species, to be done
  52. in several steps:
  53.  
  54.     1) Get the US out of the World Kop business; it's some other
  55.        power's turn in the barrel; I suggest Common Europe as the
  56.        likely source of cannon fodder candidates.
  57.  
  58.     2) Get rid of a few (thousand) other government idiocies that
  59.        waste money but do no good, like agricultural support for
  60.        products that kill people when used as advertised.
  61.  
  62.     3) Convert the income tax to a flat tax with no deductions.
  63.        Taxing unequally to promote social programs is a bad way to
  64.        do social engineering and leads, through the influence
  65.        peddlars trying to get tax breaks for their clients, to
  66.        massively corrupt government.  Deductions feed lawyers, not
  67.        the poor.  Get rid of it all and come up with a tax form
  68.        that fits on the back of a post card.

  70.     4) Take the money saved and use it to build a real space program,
  71.        one with a basis in making profits and harvesting the abundant
  72.        energy, mineral, and gas resources waiting for the taking to
  73.        the first crowd brave enough to make the journey.
  74.  
  75.     5) Given a space capability, move a breeding cohort of the
  76.        population off planet, ASAP, and continue populating space as
  77.        fast as possible.

  79. The result of such a program, carried out with planning and courage,
  80. would be high employment, unbridled prosperity, coupled in the long
  81. term with a lessening of the human burden on the ecosystem, as
  82. polluting industries and mineral recovery and energy production all
  83. moved to space.
  84.  
  85. With this as a goal, perhaps this nation could return to the uplift and
  86. spirit of the sixties and early seventies, and escape from the doldrums
  87. that began with the Arab oil embargo and have never been shaken off
  88. because we are a nation without a Purpose.

  90. Those interested in such a program, and willing to try to make the
  91. Birthright Party a visible part of campaign '92, talk up the idea among
  92. yourselves, post it around in other appropriate groups, and drop me a
  93. line. I'm willing to be the candidate, or just the organizer if a more
  94. viable candidate can be found, or just the gadfly to keep things going
  95. if that is all my part can be.

  98. it, and usher in the Age of Aquarius, rocket scientist version.
