- This reminds me of something Cat Steven's said on a radio talk show while
- he was touring the US raising money for some children's charity. He
- rationalized his support for the assassination of Rushdie by saying something
- like [BEGIN PARAPHRASE] "Americans are hypocritical. They *talk* about
- freedom of speech/religion, but when my religion calls for Rushdie's
- assassination..., well, then they're all against freedom of speech/religion.
- [END PARAPHRASE]
-
- I could hardly believe what I was hearing.
- What a true masterpiece of pseudo-intellectual rationalization.
-
- People choose whatever religion they damn well feel like choosing,
- so if everyone is free to do whatever their religion says to do,
- then everyone is free to do whatever they damn well feel like doing.
- Unless, of course, people are forced to accept whatever religion
- someone else can ram down their throat.
-
- Maybe we could have a nation-wide vote (or political battle, or how about a
- civil war), whatever religion wins is the OneTrueReligion and gets to define
- the TrueNatureOfGod. Then we could have a world-wide play-off...
