  17. Subject:        Message from Dr. Patrick Kenniff, Rector and Vice-
  18.                 Chancellor  of Concordia University in response to
  19.                 queries with regard to Dr. Fabrikant
  20.

  22. I  am  taking  the unusual step of posting a message on this medium
  23. because  it  has  come  to  my  attention that the  allegations  of
  24. scientific  misconduct  raised  by V.I. Fabrikant  continue  to  be
  25. addressed  on  this  system and because I wish to inform you of the
  26. tragic events of 24 August 1992 at our University.

  28. V.I. Fabrikant, an Associate Professor at Concordia University, has
  29. been  charged  with three counts of first-degree murder, two counts
  30. of  attempted  murder, two  counts  of  hostage-taking  as  well as
  31. uttering  death  threats and using a firearm in the commission of a
  32. crime.  Three  of  our  colleagues are dead, one remains in serious
  33. condition  and  the fifth is recovering from a gunshot wound to the
  34. leg. The  families  of  the deceased and the injured as well as the
  35. entire University community are in a  state of  shock and mourning.

  37. The   Vice-Rector,  Academic   conducted   an   inquiry   into  the
  38. numerous  allegations  he  raised  and  reported  to  the  Board of
  39. Governors  in  March  1992  that  they  were  unfounded.   However,
  40. with the continuance of Dr. Fabrikant's allegations, the University
  41. will undertake a further review with dispatch. Let us not, however,
  42. lose  sight of who the victims are in this tragedy. There can be no
  43. excuse nor justification for the brutal and senseless actions of 24
  44. August 1992.
