- I have a brochure on the Garrett Turbine Engine Company's AGT101
- automotive gas turbine. They have been working on this for years in
- conjunction with Ford. As described it is a 100 HP, 40MPG, centrifugal
- compressor, single inflow radial turbine, with rotating ceramic exhaust
- gas heat recovery device. There are versions with metal and ceramic hot
- section turbine wheels. Both look very small (4-10 cm).
-
- I hope they perfect it soon, maybe these new Ukrainian high temp. ceramics
- will be useful.
-
- The AGT101 is shown connected to a conventional automatic transmission.
- Perhaps it would be better to drive a rare-earth alternator directly,
- and power the car with rare-earth electric motors, so they can run the
- turbine at its optimum speed at all times. With an electric drive, the
- turbine can be mounted in a gimbal and compliant mounting, thus reducing
- the gyroscopic and vibration stresses on the ceramic turbine wheel, which
- I have heard from an unreliable source, is one of the main problems
- (driving along, you hit a bump, and your turbine wheel turns to sand
- which blows out the exhaust pipe :-) ).
